Built on Jesus

I was tasked to help Old North Church build their construction-themed VBS Environmental Graphic Design, including stage decorations, layout, and skit props.

The theme was “Built on Jesus,” and the skit would detail a haphazard construction crew who attempted to build a tower on an unstable foundation — when the only foundation strong enough was Jesus.

The Process

Each day, a new layer would be added to the tower, detailing a different attribute of God (including two words and a picture).

I found a rustic typeface (Kent Printed) that fit the construction theme, along with painted clipart that would seamlessly blend with the rough construction theme.

I printed these images and words oversized (so they could be seen from a distance), pieced them together, and added a white border to increase visibility.

Each of these words and icons was placed on a large box wrapped in brick paper, which would be used to make the 10 ft. tower.

Stage Decoration

Before the tower was built, the 42 brick boxes had to look like part of the set. I stacked and scattered these across the stage.

We made cranes and wrecking balls out of cardboard, butcher paper, painters’ tape, a balloon, and a trash bag.

I made the paper road along the edge of the stage using black butcher paper and yellow painters tape, carefully measuring to ensure the paper pieces fit together well.

Construction signs were added to the set for details. Butcher paper was also crumbled and placed on the ground to mimic piles of dirt.

The stage was needed for Sunday Morning Worship when we decorated, so we carefully placed the decorations around the equipment.
